Massachusetts Venture Bound. One Year On The Boat. Calendar Days 51-71. Part 2
June 27th-July 1, 2024
As you see I couldn’t post everything about Massachusetts in one blog. I am splitting it into 3 Parts. This is Part 2….Our trip from Falmouth to Provincetown with a stop in Sandwich.
Falmouth has been the farthest north we have ever traveled to by boat. Now we are off into new territory. New waters. I felt excited and a bit nervous but I have faith in my Captain to guide us through. We took off from Falmouth about 11:00 a.m. with our three lovable crazy friends. It was a gorgeous day. Our goal for the day was to get through Woods Hole, Buzzard’s Bay, through the Cape Cod Canal and landing in Sandwich. Goal achieved!
Woods Hole had a very strong current and very narrow channel but beautiful to go through. Once we passed that we entered Buzzard’s Bay. It was a nice ride and fun to know we were passing the Sea Crest Beach Resort along the way. I waved to Ann. Cape Cod Canal was not far off. We were excited to travel through it. As we did, we realized that it’s not much different then the C&D Canal except the water is much bluer. Some of us got some rays along the way while others manned their stations: The helm, the radio and the cooler. We got there about three hours later. After booking some restaurants, we ended up at the Pilot House restaurant to relax and listen to some live music. What a fun place. They had a great band, Jules and Gerry. They played songs everyone knew which allowed us to sing and dance along. The Pilot House has seating inside and out and the outside seating was fabulous. They had tables on grass which gave us the opportunity to sit on the ground. Beautiful sun, live music, people laughing and smiling, kids rolling around…it was perfect. We followed that with dinner at FIsherman’s View restaurant. We had a great meal and we were the last ones out. Not sure they were pleased with us leaving so late but we had a blast.
Sandwich is a small town right at the beginning of the Cape Cod Canal on the North side. There is a lot of current going in and out due to the waters mixing together. That is the water from the Canal and the water from the Cape Cod Bay. The Whale boats cut through the Bay to get the Atlantic ocean to find Whales. At this point we had not seen any whales, dolphins, seals or sharks. Well, we did see some seals near Block Island. I am happy not to see any sharks at anytime! But, we are hoping to see the rest as we continue north.
The next day we were relaxed and moving slow. How slow? The marina had to ask us to leave due to another boat arriving in 20 mins. Roger that! We got on our feet and hustled out. We were out in about 15 mins. Not all was battened down and few things flew around while leaving the canal. That current was intense. Nothing got damaged and we made it to Provincetown in a few hours. It was a little rough and we needed to watch out for Lobster pots. But I did well!! No sea sickness. We arrived with no issues and docking went smoothly.
Provincetown “PTown”….. What can I say? It’s never boring. It’s a fabulous, fun, educational, party town. Great bars. Great restaurants. Great shows. There was a Portuguese festival that weekend as well. It took over the church square with music, performers, art, dancing and a group that would would write poems about you. Portuguese flags everywhere. We even saw Prince live….well kind of.
We went to a Drag show, “Diva”, which was lively, cheeky and the outfits were right on. So much fun. We ate at Cilo& Sal’s and Johnny’s Hideaway. C&S was ok. My Pasta Bolognese was fantastic. The rest good. Johnny’s was great. We had a funny waitress that could handle our crowd. Donna was perfect. Stopped at Ocean 193.
It was time for our friends to go home on Sunday. Sad day. But we will see them again in Falmouth when we head south. We cleaned, got ready for our next guests and then vegged. We were wicked excited to welcome them on board. Originally we planned to be in Boston on Monday but we decided to stay in Provincetown an extra day due to the wind. So, our friends decided to take the Ferry from Boston and meet us in PTown. They had never been. Excited to show them the town.
Provincetown is all that I mentioned above but it also has quiet streets outside of the main drag, so to speak. It has beautiful cottages with English gardens and fabulous beaches. The beaches are sometimes covered with seals. Which means sharks nearby too. The flowers were gorgeous. When you go, if you have time, take time to walk out of town and enjoy the neighborhoods and beaches..
