Venture Bound to Atlantic City, NJ. One Year On The Boat Days 11-14

Our friends arrived from Colorado and off we go! NYC here we come!

Monday Day 11. Our first stop, Chesapeake City, MD.. We got a great docking space at the Chesapeake Inn & Marina. It has a nice restaurant with a Tiki bar. We had lunch and happy hour there. the food was good and we had lots of fun. Took a small walk through the small town. Learned a bit of history of the town as well.

We had a glitch with the chart plotter on the way. Spent some time on the phone with Garmin and got it all handled. Had dinner on the boat. Love having food from Giolitti’s Italian Market in Annapolis on hand. Freeze it till you want it. To top it off we had our son, Brian’s,  home made focaccia. It was a nice relaxing first day.

Tuesday Day 12. Took off at 6:30 in the morning and got to Cape May, NJ. at 11:30. Very nice cruise down the C&D Canal and The Delaware River and Bay. The winds started to pick up the closer we got to the Atlantic Ocean. Before we left we got an update on the weather and thought we may have to extend our stay in Cape May due to rain and strong winds.

We docked at the Canyon Club Resort & Marina. Coming from our direction keep an eye on the Cape May canal. Depending on your boat you may want to consider going through it during high tide then low.

We met some “Loopers” on a 46’ Grand Banks. They were half way through the Great Loop. They were so nice to help us with the Starlink that will save us some cash along the way!! Gotta be happy about saving cash. Right? Had dinner at Lucky Bones, crashed early and I ended up sleeping 10 hrs. I was the first to bed. Shocking I know! I actually pulled an Irish goodbye. Which is more of my husband’s speed but now that he is retired, I guess, he doesn’t feel the need to crash early. HA!

Wednesday Day 13. Still in Cape May. Weather was not looking any better for going north. It was awful. It was a very rainy and windy day. So, what is there to do in Cape May when the weather does not cooperate? We decided to visit NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum. This was a very interesting place. They had retired planes from WWII to Vietnam and from all branches of the US Military.. several Jets, MASH helicopters, and an old Blue Angels Jet. Some of the history covered the Tuskegee Airmen to the Women Airfare Service Pilots (WASP) and Coast Guard. They allowed us to climb into some of the planes which I loved. I can not believe how small some of the seats were. To think of our pilots cramped in them and fighting was a bit humbling. Touring this museum was a nice surprise.

We followed that with a lunch at the Rusty Nail. Which was fine. Not much going on due to the weather and still early in the season. Tried taking a stroll on the boardwalk and beach but the wind and rain were too much. I was shocked to see surfers in the ocean in this weather. We headed back to the boat.

We planned a theme dinner. A Mexican night. We made fajitas, margaritas, played salsa music and danced. I even got us some sombreros and maracas. It was a fun night. Again, first one in bed though. What is happening to me? I have to laugh at myself. Oh well, I guess it’s part of getting older. Older!! Did I really just write that? Oh my!

Thursday Day 14. The weather was sunny but the wind was still going strong. I decided to take it on with my Captain and friends. The Captain wanted to try to make it to NYC, which I think is about 140 miles, but agreed to stop early in Atlantic City, NJ. It took us three hours to get there heading in the winds with active seas. I will spare all the details but let’s just say having my head in a trash can for three hours was not pleasant. I know I get sea sick when we are out in the ocean but never like this., Took me a day or so to recover. Anyway, we arrived safely thanks to Keith. We docked at The Golden Nugget marina. The crew went into the casino and had lunch and back to margaritas! Not for me. I managed a shower, got off the boat, had some soup and back to bed!

The next morning Venture took off for NYC while my friend and I rented a car and drove up there. I was not ready to get out in the ocean just yet! We followed Venture’s journey through the NEBO app. Our NYC experience will be out soon…..
