Block Island, RI for Memorial Day Weekend. Venture Bound One Year On The Boat Days 22-25
Friday Day 22
GREAT WEATHER!
Off we go to Block Island, RI. What an unbelievable cruise. The seas could not have been any calmer then they were. It was like glass. We left Greenport, NY at 7:00 am and arrived at 10:30 am. We fueled and docked just in time for our guests to arrive. As were finishing with the lines they were there. Perfect timing. Our friends came up from home, Annapolis, MD. They flew into Providence, RI and took the ferry from Narragansett, RI to Block Island. The ferry docks at the Old Harbor so they had to take a taxi to the New Harbor where we were docked. Seems like a lot but all went smooth and quick. The harbors are only two miles away so if nothing else they could have walked over. We docked, settled and took off for lunch.
The Oar restaurant was recommended by several people and we could take Mini Venture over. Perfect. I’ll give more details about the Oar later.
Following lunch with took a tour of the island with our rented scooters. We had a blast. I highly recommend it. We had a hiccup as we started. Someone, I won’t mention who, took a spill while testing the scooter and he/she’s AppleWatch’s screen had a message that came up saying, “It looks like you’ve taken a fall” with SOS and Emrgency Call options on it. Oh my! Funny and strange to have that pop up. Not funny but to have that pop up made me think of how “Big Brother” is always watching. That is strange. It’s good to know that can happen in case we really do need help. Funny….we did have a good laugh. No one was hurt and that was the important part.
Keith and I have done this before but I really saw the beauty of this island much more so this time around. Some areas looked like, what I would imagine, Ireland or the country side of England would look like. Super green, hilly, with stone walls separating properties. We visited the South East Lighthouse, Mohegan Bluffs, North Lighthouse, and some areas we had not done before. This was due to me leading the pack and made a wrong turn. It happens! What can I say? We finished the day back on the boat with drinks and pizza. We ordered some pizza from Buddy’s Pizza in Detroit. It was quick and easy. Love our convection/microwave over.
That day, we learned to make sure NOT to leave the keys on the mini venture when docked due to high school kids jumping in it to take selfies. It could have been dangerous for them had they taken it out and a bout! Lesson learned.
Saturday Day 23
Girls’ day! Keith was fighting a cough so he chilled for the day. So, the girls and I walked in to town. About 2 miles each way. We hit all the stores. Bought some swag and walked back. About 5 miles all together which felt great. Then we took Mini Venture to Dead Eye Dick’s. for lunch. Funny name for a restaurant but we had a great lunch. Took a tour of the New Harbor. Many boats were arriving for the weekend. Had a few drinks at the pool followed by making dinner on the boat. We played the Sound Game. I don’t think we followed the actual rules but we had some good laughs. I think we ended up playing it like charades instead of making sounds. You try to describe a Mechanical Bull with out talking!!! Not that easy but pretty funny. It was all good.
Sunday Day 24
We woke up to a seriously foggy morning. We could barely see the end of the dock where the Tiki Bar was. Through out the day it alternated from foggy to sunny. Keith was feeling better and nothing was happening with the Pirate’s festival. So curious. We decided to bar hop via mini venture, the rib/skiff. We went to Payne’s Dock & Mahogany Shoals and The Oar. After, we put on are digs for the festival. We did bring them. Why not wear them? Walked to the Tiki Bar where we were the only ones dressed up and there was only about 25 people there. WTH! No one there and no one dressed. We still had a great time. People loved our outfits, especially one of them. Wench to the finest. Had dinner on the boat and called it a night. But I stayed up to work on a painting I had started in Greenport.
Monday Day 25 Memorial Day
A foggy and rainy day. No BBQ today. Our guests went home. Sad to say goodbye but they left us with good memories. We had a chill day. I painted, blogged, watched some movies and we caught up on some sleep. Grilled cheese and soup for dinner.
Tuesday Day 26
We were suppose to leave but due to the weather from Monday, we held off a day. Rough seas due to all the winds we had over the weekend. We did some cleaning and laundry. Keith and I rode our E-bikes into town to found a frame for my painting. Now, I will tell you about The Oar restaurant.
As I said earlier, during our stay on Block Island, this restaurant was highly recommended. We went not only once but three times. It has a great atmosphere, great views, great food and great service. One of things I liked best is, if you bring a personal OAR (not a paddle), blank or decorated they will hang it in the restaurant. They have hundreds hanging from the ceiling and stacked on the walls. Well, we didn’t have an actual OAR to give to them, instead, I had a painting with oars that I made, put it in a frame and asked them if they would hang this instead. They said, “Yes.”. We will have to come back, when we head south later in the summer, to search for it!
Where we stayed. We docked at the Champlin’s Marina and Resort for the weekend. A pretty nice place with rooms, a cafe, tiki bar, pool, fire pits and good dock hands. The resort was having their 1st annual Pirates Festival. We all brought some things to dress up for it. They brought in an incredible 196’ pirate ship called Oliver Hazard Perry. It was amazing. A few small kids were dressed up in pirates costumes on Saturday morning and took tours of the ship. The tiki bar, at the end of the dock, had a band but it didn’t start until 9:00pm. We could barely hear it. I was disappointed no adults dressed up. I hope they try it again next year, maybe later in the season. I think it could be a great time.
Over all we had fantastic time. Arrgh!
